TENS MACHINES
What is Electrotherapy? Electrotherapy refers to a range of electrical stimulation treatments, with the most common being TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) and EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation). In essence, electrical currents are utilized to either calm nerves or stimulate muscle fibers.
How does it work? There are two main theories behind its effectiveness. First, the stimulation prompts your body to release endorphins, which are natural pain relievers. Second, the stimulation prevents pain signals from being received by the brain, meaning you might still have the injury, but you don’t feel the pain and thus experience temporary relief.
Does it hurt? No, electrotherapy devices are calibrated to frequencies that alleviate pain, not increase it. Some patients may become sensitive to the "tingling" sensation on their skin after prolonged use, but reducing the intensity often mitigates this effect.
How is it administered? Electrodes are placed on the skin, either directly over the painful area, along key nerve pathways, or on muscles. A small electrical current is transmitted through lead wires to the electrodes.
Is it safe? Yes, the electrical current used is minimal and will not shock or harm the skin. However, patients with cancer, pregnancy, epilepsy, or pacemakers should avoid electrotherapy. Electrodes should never be placed on the face, front of the neck, or heart, as these areas can be affected by the current. They should also not be placed on open wounds or areas with limited sensation.
How long does it take? Individual sessions typically last between 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the specific therapy. Patients often report immediate pain relief after each session, with effects lasting for several hours, making electrotherapy an effective pain management method.
Clinical vs Home Therapy
The equipment in our clinic allows us to precisely determine the ideal settings for your condition. We can adjust pulse, frequency, wavelengths, power, and other factors to optimize your treatment outcomes. Our expertise enables us to fine-tune these settings to reduce treatment times and enhance results.
Portable electrotherapy units are available for home use. While these do not match the power or functionality of clinical units, many patients benefit from using them between clinic visits.
Before recommending the purchase of a portable unit, our team will assess your condition to ensure that home TENS or EMS therapy will be beneficial. We will discuss your pain relief goals, teach you how to place the electrodes, and help you establish programs to maximize the treatment benefits for your specific conditions.
All the units available at our clinic are:
Licensed by Health Canada
Clinically proven
