Medical Acupuncture
Acupuncture is used to promote the body’s natural healing mechanisms by inserting fine needles at key points.
Electrical stimulation may be applied if needed. The needles stimulate the nervous system, causing it to release chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord and brain, which in turn either reduces pain or causes more chemicals/hormones to be released, and triggering the body’s internal regulating system.

In most cases, no. Sometimes, symptoms may worsen for several days, or you may notice changes in your appetite, sleep, bowel or urination patterns, or emotional state, but these changes are not a cause for concern—rather, they are an indication that treatment is starting to work. Some patients describe experiencing feelings of deep relaxation and/or mild disorientation following treatment. If this happens to you, these symptoms will pass after a short amount of time.
Do Acupuncture Needles Hurt?
There’s not one answer to this question, but, in general, most people feel minimal pain when needles are inserted, and some feel no pain at all. Once the needles are inserted, you will not feel pain. The thin, solid stainless steel construction of acupuncture needles makes them much less painful than the hollow needles used in blood draws, etc.
We used disposable needles, so there is no risk of infection.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
That depends. Each person’s needs are different, so each person’s course of treatment will vary. If you have a complex or longstanding condition, we may recommend 1 or 2 treatments a week for several months. Other problems may require fewer visits.
Are There Any Treatment Day Dos and Don’ts?
Yes. Please follow these guidelines to maximize the value of your treatment:
Avoid eating a large meal right before and/or after your treatment.
Do not over exercise, engage in sexual activity or consume alcohol within 6 hours before or after your treatment.
Arrange your schedule so that after your treatment you will have time for rest. This is especially important for the first few visits.
If you are on any prescription drugs, continue to take them as directed. Substance abuse (drugs or alcohol) will seriously interfere with the effectiveness of your treatments.
Pay attention to and/or keep notes about your response to each treatment. This helps your doctor make any necessary adjustments to follow-up treatments.
Is Acupuncture Covered by Health Insurance?
That depends on your provider. Please review your health policy to determine if acupuncture benefits are part of your coverage—acupuncture is considered a chiropractic service under extended healthcare plans. More and more providers are recognizing the value of providing coverage for medical acupuncture service.
